HOCKEY HELMET FITTING GUIDE

October 22, 2017

The most important piece of protective equipment you will buy is a helmet. A properly fitted helmet is the first line of defence against major head injuries. The best helmet isn't necessarily the most expensive or advanced one on the market. The best helmets are the ones that fit right.

HELMET SIZE

With the large variety of helmets on the market it is overwhelming to decide which one is the right one, but with the correct size and fit, a helmet provides crucial protection against head injuries. You can find your helmet size by measuring the circumference of the head about 1/2-1" above the brow line. This measurement will correlate with the manufacturer size specifications for each helmet. Typically helmets come in Small, Medium, and Large. Occasionally helmets are found in Adult Extra Large and Youth Extra Small. Sizes can vary significantly between brands so its important to always try a helmet on before you buy it.

HELMET FIT

A properly fitted helmet should fit snug at the crown, temples, back of the neck, and across the forehead. Most of today's helmets come with tool-free adjustment features so that a custom fit is easily achievable. When you shake your head up-and-down or side-to-side the helmet shouldn't shake loose. A bit of redness around the head is normal, but pain or discomfort is not. If the helmet pinches or causes painful pressure then you may need to try a size up. It's time to try other brands or styles if your helmet is adjusted properly but there are still significant gaps preventing a proper fit.

HELMET INTEGRITY

Most helmets have a lifespan of 5 years. This information is available on the helmet itself. Do not wear helmets after they have exceed their lifespan. Doing so could compromise helmet performance and your safety. Helmets are only designed to withstand a few major impacts. These impacts include puck and stick hits, as well as hitting your head on the boards or ice. Helmets need replacement after several major impacts.  A dented or cracked helmet requires immediately replacement.

HELMET HELP

Shopping for a helmet is overwhelming as there are so many brands, styles, sizes and technologies to consider. Most sports stores will be able to offer you help to choose the best helmet for your needs, and ensure that your helmet is a good fit.

ALLSPORTS FAMILY FAVOURITE

The Allsports Family highly reccomends CCM's Fitlite 3DS Youth Hockey Helmet. We believe it's the best youth helmet on the market for it's price, and protection.
